Where were you?

I was pressed into our crowded, but silent employee cafeteria.

Hundreds of eyes glued to the television, and me drinking green, honey ginseng tea-swallowing hopeful lumps in my throat with every sip.

Norman-Manley Airport in Jamaica. Check-in employees, janitors, bus drivers, travelers all momentarily forgot about what they needed to do and where they needed to go. The two-sided television post was the only place you could watch it in the terminal without already having passed through security. People gathered around, cheering, smiling, clapping, crying. It was an infinitely better sight to watch the joy on the faces of the Jamaican crowd than it was to watch the TV itself. It was the cherry on the top of the sundae; I repeatedly broke into spontaneous smiles all the way home.
